Three financial services and consumer advocacy groups have joined to send letters to the House and Senate urging them to preserve the temporary tax exemptions for forgiven debt . The Financial Services Roundtable, the Center for Responsible Lending, and the Housing Policy Council sent the letters Wednesday to the chairs and ranking members of the House Committee on Ways and Means and the Senate Committee on Finance. The groups are petitioning for an extension of The Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act which is due to sunset on December 31. The legislation was originally passed in 2007 and prevents homeowners who are underwater on their mortgage from receiving a tax bill if they sell their home through a short sale or receive a loan modification that includes principal reduction. No one disputes that Renato Seabra, 22, killed Carlos Castro, 65, in January 2011. news in brief may 2Affiliate marketing specialist Income Access has signed a deal with the Stratosphere Casino, Hotel & Tower through the casino?s affiliate ACEP Interactive. The deal will see the two working together on a full marketing framework covering the company?s land-based and online gaming properties. Nicky Senyard, CEO of Income Access, added: ?We are now well positioned to tackle the emerging US online gaming market, which we see as a very big opportunity. ACEP is also approaching this in an incredibly strategic manner, so we?re very pleased to be working with them.? The deal will challenge Nevada?s rules on the affiliate marketing part of the industry and it?s not clear from the release as to whether they have a licence or not.

Serial acquisition machine Amaya Gaming Group has announced its latest set of results with huge increases in both earnings and revenue. Revenue increased 360 percent to $18.32million with the firm themselves admitting that it?s due to it being the first time they?ve included both Chartwell and Cryptologic on the sheet. The revenue growth was mainly concentrated in the Caribbean and European markets and David Baazov, president and CEO, added: ?We were very pleased with the organic growth of our revenues in the third quarter over the second quarter, which was primarily due to the growth of the licensee bases in Europe of our subsidiaries CryptoLogic and Chartwell.?

Earnings increased from a loss of $900k this time last year to $5.91m this year and it goes to show the constant acquisitions, the latest of which (Cadillac Jack and OnGame) aren?t included on this balance sheet, aren?t haphazard in the slightest.

Aussie slots manufacturer Aristocrat has posted net profit for the opening nine months of the year that increased by 128 percent compared with last year. January to September posted a net profit of $45.5million with ?improvements in operational delivery and share gains across all key markets? given as the reason for the increase. The company has originally focused almost entirely on the land-based market and they?ve recently started to rechannel their efforts on developing for online. That in mind, CEO Jamie Odell stated: ?Recently announced acquisitions position us to compete in the expanding online and social gaming markets.? These strategic steps, coupled with our investment in outstanding creative and technical talent, will deliver real value for the business over the medium term as the industry evolves.?

iStat Menus 4 brings Retina support, new design, and more to the Mac

Bjango's iStat Menus is the gold standard of system monitoring tools. It's one of the first apps I bought when I switched back to the Mac, and it's one of the first apps I -- and almost every geeky/techy type I know -- installs when they get a new Mac. Originally designed as a Dashboard widget, iStat has since moved to the menu bar, and with iStat Menus 4, it's now completely, comfortably ensconced there with a bold new look and full on Retina support.

If you haven't used iStat Menus before, the gist is this -- it tells you everything you need to know, likely more than you need to know, about what's going on with your Mac. That includes CPU, memory, disk usage, network activity, battery status (if you're using a MacBook), and tons more. If you're already familiar with iStat Menus, new stuff includes per process network bandwidth monitoring, calendar events, history graphs across the board, more detailed GPU monitoring, the ability to change fan speed, SMART status monitoring to disks, and read/write IOPS to disks.

iStat Menus 4 offers a free 14-day trial. If you like it, you can buy it for $16. If you're an existing iStat Menus user, there's also upgrade pricing available.

Note: Bjango's Marc Edwards is a friend and co-host of mine, but I've been using and loving iStat since long before I met Marc. Still, don't take my word for it, grab the free trial and decide for yourself.

Were They or Weren't They? | Diversity Journal

By Debra L. Stang

One of the banners frequently flown at LGBTQ pride parades reads, ?Unfortunately, history has set the record a little too straight.? The following historical cases seek to rectify that mistake by opening the closet doors on a few notable LGBTQ people throughout history.

Case #1
Richard I of England (1157-1199)

King Richard, known as the Lionheart, ruled England from 1189 until his death in 1199. He is perhaps best known as the king who led the Third Crusade which tried?and ultimately failed?to recapture Jerusalem from the Muslims.

Although King Richard was married to Berengaria of Navarre, the marriage was without love and the couple spent almost no time together. Romantically, Richard has been linked to the King of France (with whom he shared a bed) and various soldiers who fought with him in the Crusade.

Even though the Encyclopedia Britannica states of Richard, ?. . . he was, there seems no doubt, a homosexual,? some historians have argued that Richard?s relationships with men were no more than ?diplomacy.?

Case #2
Florence Nightingale (1820-1910)

Florence Nightingale, who modernized and revolutionized nursing, rarely said much about her personal life.

However, several sources including Parted Lips: Lesbian Love Quotes Through the Ages, credit her with the following statement: ?I have lived and slept in the same bed with English countesses and Prussian farm women . . . no woman has excited passions among women more than I have.?

Although that statement seems unambiguous, there are still biographers who declare that there is no evidence of Nightingale having any same sex relationships.

Case #3
Herman Melville (1819-1891)

Herman Melville was an American novelist who also wrote short stories, essays, and poems. Although largely unknown in his time, he is now famous for prose such as Moby-Dick and Billy Budd.

Melville was married, but the relationship was not a happy one, and he preferred to spend his time in the company of men. Whether he actually had physical relationships with men is unknown, but many of his stories center around the themes of close friendship and ?unnatural crimes? between males.

He formed a close friendship with fellow author Nathaniel Hawthorne and seems to have had a crush on him, but Hawthorne, whose interests lay strictly in women, did not reciprocate these feelings.

Biographer Rictor Norton states bluntly that Melville was ?confused.?

Case #4
Bessie Smith (1894-1937)

In her day, Bessie Smith was one of the most famous blues singers. According to biographer Chris Albertson, who spoke extensively to Smith?s niece, Ruby Walker, Smith was comfortable with both male and female partners.

Like many of the female blues singers, she also made positive references to lesbianism in her music.

Smith married Jack Gee in 1923, but they separated in 1929, partly because he could not cope with her bisexuality. Later, Smith formed a common law relationship with a man named Richard Morgan, and the two stayed together until her death.

Case #5
Anderson Cooper (1967- )

Anderson Cooper is an American journalist and a well-known television personality who has frequently spoken out in favor of LGBTQ rights. Several witnesses say that they have seen him with male companions at gay functions.

For many years, Cooper himself did not publicly acknowledge being gay, declining to talk about his personal life and saying that he wants the news stories he covers to be about the issues, not about his sexuality.

He ended years of speculation on July 2, when he sent an email to Andrew Sullivan, a blogger for the Daily Beast: ?The fact is, I?m gay.? He also described himself as happy and proud.

Case #6
Jodie Foster (1962- )

Jodie Foster is an American actress, director, and producer. She was unwillingly thrust into the spotlight in 1981 when John Hinckley Jr. became obsessed with her and shot then-President Ronald Reagan in an effort to gain her attention. Since then, however, it has been Foster?s talent that has gotten her recognized for her performances in films such as Silence of the Lambs and The Accused.

Foster has long been suspected of being a lesbian by celebrity-watchers, but she has been fiercely protective of her personal life.

In December 2007, she referred to her longtime companion Cydney Bernard as ?my beautiful Cydney.? The relationship ended shortly thereafter. Since then, fans have urged her to come out of the closet and comedian Ricky Gervais ?outed? her publicly with a crude joke, but Foster herself has remained silent on the matter.

Case #7
Peter I. Tchaikovsky (1840-1893)

Peter Tchaikovsky was a Russian composer famous today for many pieces including The Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, and Romeo and Juliet. Although brilliant in his work, Tchaikovsky suffered from severe bouts of depression and nervous breakdowns. His mental health became even more fragile after his marriage.

He also developed a passionate crush on an adult nephew, but it is not clear whether this relationship was consummated.

Towards the end of his life, Tchaikovsky is quoted as saying, ?Only now, especially after the story of my marriage, have I finally begun to understand that there is nothing more fruitless than not wanting to be that which I am by nature.?

In recent years, revisionist historians have claimed the composer killed himself to cover up a same-sex affair. The research, however, indicates that he died from cholera after unknowingly drinking bad water.

Case #8
Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962)

Eleanor Roosevelt was married to Franklin Delano Roosevelt and was the First Lady between 1933 and 1945. But her place in history would be assured even without her husband. She was passionate about racial justice and worked closely with the NAACP to improve conditions in the United States for African Americans. During World War II she became involved in the war effort by encouraging volunteerism and founding the Office of Civilian Defense. Later, she became a delegate to the United Nations General Assembly and wrote several books about her life and experiences.

Letters and eyewitnesses show that Eleanor Roosevelt had a long-term intimate relationship with journalist Lorena Hickok. There is no proof that they were lovers, but passages from their correspondence strongly suggest that they were.

In one letter, for instance, Roosevelt wrote, ?Funny, everything I do my thoughts fly to you. Never are you out of my heart.? In another, ?I want to put my arms around you. I ache to hold you close.?

Sadly, little information remains about their relationship because both Roosevelt?s family and Hickok?s family destroyed letters and pictures in an attempt to keep the affair private.

Case #9
J. Edgar Hoover (1895-1972)

J. Edgar Hoover was the first director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Although he certainly helped build the FBI into a strong, crime-fighting agency, he also used his power to harass those he didn?t like.

Hoover was openly homophobic and persecuted anyone he knew or believed to be gay. Yet at the same time, according to Queers in History: The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Historical Gays, Lesbians, and Bisexuals by Keith Stern, Hoover was reportedly seen at gay parties thrown by Roy Cohn. Some witnesses even reported he was dressed in women?s clothing.

More telling, Hoover conducted a 44-year relationship with FBI Special Agent Clyde Tolson. They were together until Hoover died in 1972. At the funeral service, Tolson was given the flag draped over Hoover?s coffin.

Some historians have tried to argue that the relationship between Hoover and Tolson was platonic and ?fraternal,? but there can be little doubt that, whether or not he considered himself gay, Hoover was a man who had sex with men.

Case #10
Jane Addams (1860-1935)

Jane Addams is credited for founding the profession of social work. She was a Nobel Peace Prize winner (the first woman in the United States to win that award) and she worked closely with those who were poor and underprivileged. She also founded Hull House in Chicago to help immigrants to the United States become adjusted and find work.

Although Addams never spoke about her sexuality, historian Lillian Faderman has noted that Addams spent all of her adult life in relationships with women. Her longest relationship, with Mary Rozet Smith, lasted for 40 years. The two owned property together, slept in the same bed, traveled together, and were acknowledged by friends as a couple. Addams frequently called Smith ?dearest? and said ?I am yours ?til death.?

If you?d like to read about more famous people who had same-sex relationships, the following resources are a great place to start:

? Out of the Past by Neil Miller
? The Gay 100 by Paul Russell
? Odd Girls and Twilight Lovers by Lillian Faderman

Greek bankruptcy averted _ for now

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? European and global financial leaders have agreed to release ?44 billion ($57 billion) in critical loans to Greece and provide billions in additional debt relief in order to help the country stabilize its ailing economy.

After three weeks of negotiations, Greece's euro partners and the International Monetary Fund agreed early Tuesday morning to release the loans in four installments beginning next month. The leaders also settled on a raft of measures ? including a debt buyback program and an interest rate cut on loans ? that will reduce the country's debts by about ?40 billion.

Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras hailed the agreement in Brussels as a victory. "Yesterday, a very grey, a very dark time for Greece ended definitively," he said in a televised address to the nation, adding that the agreement "managed to ensure us remaining in the euro."

But the country will still face years of economic pain as austerity measures agreed to as part of the bailout package are implemented.

Most stock markets in Europe were modestly higher on the news out of Brussels with the Stoxx 50 index of leading European shares closing up 0.2 percent. Meanwhile the euro gave up earlier gains to trade 0.4 percent lower at $1.2941. The interest rate charged on Greece's benchmark 10-year bonds, an indicator of investor confidence in a country's finances, fell 0.2 percentage points to 14.47 percent on the news of the debt deal.

"There remains the potential for this deal to fall apart in the medium term as there are a lot of moving parts and it is a long way away from the permanent fix that the IMF had been insisting upon," said Gary Jenkins, managing director of Swordfish Research.

"It is just one more big kick of the can down the road."

For three years, Greece has been struggling to convince markets as well as its creditors that it can get a grip on its public finances, which had spiraled out of control. The country is predicted to enter its sixth year of recession and is weighed down by an unemployment rate of 25 percent.

The so-called troika of the European Central Bank, IMF and the European Commission has twice agreed to bail out Greece, pledging a total of ?240 billion in rescue loans ? of which the country has received about ?150 billion so far. In return for its bailout loans, Greece has had to impose several rounds of austerity measures and submit its economy to scrutiny.

Without the bailout money, the country would be facing bankruptcy and a possible forced exit from the 17-country eurozone. This would have potentially chaotic repercussions for the world economy.

Nonetheless, the spending cuts and reforms insisted on by the troika have been painful. Ordinary Greeks are struggling to make ends meet as wages have been cut and taxes increased. The country is routinely shut down as strike after strike is called in protest of yet more austerity. Meanwhile, extreme political views on both the left and right are enjoying increased popularity.

The eurogroup and IMF agreed to release in December ?34.4 billion in loans originally scheduled for June. The remainder will be issued in three installments in the first quarter of 2013. The money will be used to help recapitalize Greece's struggling banking industry and pay back suppliers, including its pharmacists which have gone for months without any payment from the Greek state welfare system.

Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras said the deal was "very important for it keeps Greece in the euro, offers it a significant opportunity to exit the vicious cycle of recession and over-indebtedness, and contributes to its debt reduction."

But Germany's finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, warned that Greece still has to stick to its side of the bargain for the bailout loans and debt relief to work.

"We can do what we want, from the IMF to the eurogroup, if Greece itself doesn't implement the necessary, difficult reforms and adjustment measures step by step, then it's a mission impossible," he told reporters in Berlin.

The meeting in Brussels was the third time in the three weeks that eurozone finance ministers had tried to hammer out a deal on the next installment of bailout money for Greece.

The main aim of the bailout program is to right Greece's economy and get it to a point where it can independently raise money on the debt markets once the bailout loans start to run out at the end of 2014. It has been clear for months that the country is far from achieving that goal. Greece's debt levels are expected to hit 190 percent of its annual economic output next year? some ?346 billion. The talks have centered on trying to get Greece back on the path to sustainability by reducing the country's debt load.

Current forecasts have Greece's debt level at 144 percent of its output by 2020. The IMF had originally said it would only agree to the bailout program if the country's debt was at 120 percent by then. A compromise between the IMF and the eurozone ministers was reached early Tuesday where Greece will now have to reach a 124 percent debt load by 2020 and below 110 percent by 2022. The difference between the current forecast and the new 2020 target would involve a cut in Greece's debt load of some ?40 billion.

To reach this, the leaders agreed on a raft of measures. These include:

?A cut of 1 percentage point on the interest rate charged to Greece by other eurozone member states, excluding those that are also receiving bailouts.

?A 15-year extension of the maturities of loans from other countries and the eurozone's bailout fund, the European Financial Stability Facility, and a deferral of interest payments by Greece on EFSF loans by 10 years.

? The ECB will give up any of the profits it made on the Greek bonds it holds. Rather than giving back the money directly, which is against its founding charter, the ECB will hand it over to the eurozone's national central banks, which will then pass the funds on to Greece.

? A program whereby Greece could buy back some of its debt from private investors. The timing for this program is still to be revealed ? mainly to stop the price of the bonds from rising in the market, thereby undermining any hope of success. Germany's Schaeuble said the debt buyback will be financed by the current bailout program, the next installment of loan payments, as well as Greece issuing more treasury bills.

The deal still requires the authorization of a number of parliaments in Europe, including Germany's, where patience with repeated Greek rescues has been running low.

However, Rainer Bruederle, the caucus leader of the Free Democrats, the junior coalition partner, said he expects broad approval when changes to the program are voted on this week.

"Conditions have been put together which maintain a tough mechanism toward Greece, but still save us from a collapse of the Greek economy possibly having consequences that could pull down the whole of Europe," he said.

Celebrating your Parents Anniversaries | Her Caribbean

Celebrating your Parents AnniversariesThey brought you into the world and if you are lucky enough to have parents who are still together, it is only right that you help them celebrate their anniversaries through the years. You can?t be expected to celebrate every year, but there are some special ones which definitely require attention. If you want to treat your nearest and dearest, these ideas may help you on your way with your anniversary gifts.

First Year

You may not be around for the first year of your parent?s anniversary, but on the other hand, you might be! If you want to go with the traditional first year anniversary present, you should opt for something made of paper, such as a portrait of their favourite place together. The modern route would usually be a clock as this is the type of?anniversary gifts?which they can cherish forever.

Fifth Year

The traditional fifth year wedding anniversary gift would be something made of wood, so you may wish to consider a wooden frame with a photo of them both in it. Silverware is the choice for modern gifts and you can even get it engraved with a message to make it even more special and so that they can keep it and cherish it forever.

Tenth Year

The tenth year of wedded bliss calls for something extra special and you can?t get much more special than diamond jewellery. You may have to save up for a bit longer with this one, but it will be worth it to see the look on your parents? faces. You can always go with the traditional option if you don?t have the budget for this though, which is aluminium and tin. You can even design your own homemade present for the occasion.

Twenty Five Years

This is a big one; a life sentence to some people. Therefore this momentous occasion requires great anniversary gifts to celebrate it. The twenty-fifth year of wedded bliss is signified by silver, so you should opt for a present in this colour to celebrate the occasion. As you can imagine, there is lots of choice here, including silverware, picture frames and jewellery. You can also pick a present to suit your budget, as it doesn?t have to cost the earth for this type of present.

Thirty Years

If you reach thirty years of marriage, you definitely deserve some diamonds and these signify the thirty year milestone. Diamonds are a girls? best friend so your mum will love this present, maybe just throw in some beers for your dad! They don?t even have to be real diamonds, it?s the thought that counts as they say and diamonds are pretty expensive!

Thirty Five Years

Another milestone in the wedding anniversary timeline, thirty-five years is another special one which deserves special anniversary gifts. Coral and jade are the colour?options you have for this special occasion, both for the traditional and the more contemporary. You can buy anything in these colours and you will be really marking the occasion in a special way.

Forty Years

The forty-year anniversary is marked with ruby, so you can find something special in this gemstone. You may wish to choose some nice jewellery for both parents with ruby in it, so they can keep it forever and cherish it. There are also options for other pieces in the home, such as photo frames with ruby on them to create the perfect gift.

Forty Five Years

Sapphire marks the forty-five years of marriage, so this is an option if you want to treat your parents on their special day. You don?t have to choose this but it symbolises the occasion so is a good keepsake. ?You will find sapphire on lots of different pieces of jewellery and also engraved on lots of other household items.

Fifty Years

Can you imagine putting up with someone for 50 years? No, neither can I but if your parents manage it, it is worth the gold which symbolises the occasion. Gold jewellery or anything with a bit of gold on it will be sure to tick the boxes.

There are?anniversary gifts?to suit every year on the calendar, so choose one which suits your parents and will make them happy.

grange genna: Reference and Education Posting Category - May

This can be a perspective comparable to creativity expert Ken Robinson's analysis about how precisely people lose power they have to ponder the possible uses of a paper clip since they grow older, simply because they stop communicating with them about the nature of the paper clip. Comforting news for such people is that government is providing a lot of grants and support if you're going through their studies. Presently the education sector with the nation has good openings for numerous educated youth in the country. All the students are strictly necessary to follow the proper time table of the school to keep up the regularity and worthiness within their work. You are certainly not required to appear for any written entrance exam for admission into most with the B. masterdegrees-online.com And today, the greatest question personally is, how is it that anyone get going to a school to gain elementary education, when that education is performing no good to him inside future.

A career in the relevant field of studies may be the first choice. Find employment in the kind of type of cooking that interests you. Internet Marketing Search Engine Optimization SEM SEO service ...

There are millions of different online businesses out there, and if you expect your particular business to be successful, then you need to implement some sound marketing techniques. By reading through this information, you will find valuable information on how to best utilize the Internet for marketing purposes. Keep reading for great Internet marketing information.

Think about methods you want to use to advertise your webpage. Free or cheap methods to promote your business are to make a blog or use social networks to promote your business. There are many ways to get people to come to your site. It just takes some creativity.

Make sure that you maximize the quality of third-party security with transactions. Many different companies offer a variety of secure services. VeriSign is one of the programs that helps to keep financial information private. Security systems can cost money, but they are absolute necessities for doing business online safely.

Internet marketing is both similar to, and different from, other marketing tactics. Be ready for any changes that may come up, like if search engines stop putting focus on title tags. Knowing this, you might need to place more effort in marketing a video to viral audiences.

Every company should have both an interesting slogan and a professional logo, no matter the size of the company. You customers will remember you by how you portray your brand. Customers tend to remember catchy slogans for quite a while. When a customer is ready to buy a product, he might remember your slogan even if he doesn?t remember the name of your business. In the age of the internet, that?s not a big problem.

Sending emails is a great way to stay in touch with your customers, but make sure you send out varied content. A block of links that remain the same with every email your customers receive is easy to start ignoring. Create variety in your emails to gain attention.

Another option would be combining products into a package deal and selling it for a lower price. That way the customer gets more bang for their buck. Advertisements for sales or promotions must be detailed and contain the exact conditions of the offer.

Use social networks such as Facebook and Twitter to connect with your audience. You can use these sites to advertise new offers or to share your latest articles. However, make sure to not over-advertise on these websites. Rather, strive to post useful and smart messages with intermittent marketing messages interspersed.

Making your site stand out is a great Internet promotion advantage you can use. Making your site stand out is what drives visitors towards your site, and there are a lot out there so this is a good strategy. You should showcase something you offer that no one else does.

Make a webpage specifically built for public relations. This is where you can include information that online magazines and newspapers can publish. Not only is this simple to do, but it also is an excellent way to promote your business.

Spin the positives when selling your goods. Concentrate on the value your product or service will add to their life. Tell them how it will make their life better. Having a positive attitude, and being confident that your product will work to the customer?s benefit, will encourage more sales.

High-quality graphics of your products can make or break an online sale. Your customers need to be able to visualize the items they are about to buy, and see the detail of your high-quality products. Allow customers to post their own images of your products to show how they use them. If your product warrants use of ?before and after? pictures, they can be an effective selling tool.

If you can you should give your away something branded for free to help spread awareness of your business. For example, if it?s a wallpaper, submit it to sites that offer free wallpapers. Many websites give their customers freebies, downloads, and e-zines that accept links for you to submit your site.

As stated above, Internet marketing helps your business get noticed. Traditional advertising methods just cannot give you the visibility and the worldwide presence that Online marketing can provide. Use the helpful tips here, and find out what works best for you.

The formatting of your website?s text plays an important role in its attractiveness and success. You can emphasize a single word using tags to underline, bold, or italicize it. This can help to distinguish how you want your customer to receive a certain message, which can help with the clarity of what you are trying to say.

Richard Stearns: Living as an Authentic Christian in a Non-Christian World

After the election, I published an article in this space that struck a chord with many Christians. I suggested that engaging in a bitter 'culture war' in order to preserve America's formerly dominant Christian culture has been largely a failed strategy. We cannot win in the courts and at the ballot box that which we have lost in the court of public opinion. Instead, I argued, we should embrace the strategy that has successfully attracted people to Jesus for two thousand years - authentic Christianity.

What if we simply stuck to what Jesus commanded us to do: love our neighbors as ourselves, care for the poor and the sick and the brokenhearted, stand up for the oppressed, be generous with our time and our money, and live winsome lives filled with grace and gentleness?

Christians have always lived, and often thrived, in cultures where they are minorities. Christianity began in a Jewish culture and thrived in a pagan Roman one. The apostle Paul, writer of nearly half the New Testament, actually offers advice to the church in Corinth which lived in the midst of a very pagan society. His words should guide us today.

In I Corinthians 5:9, Paul encourages the Christians to clean up their own affairs. The church was in a mess with sexual shenanigans, internal bickering, and a deep division between rich and poor. Paul gives them some advice, but he also says Christians shouldn't worry about whether others follow Christian moral teaching.

"I wrote you in my earlier letter that you shouldn't make yourselves at home among the sexually promiscuous. I didn't mean that you should have nothing at all to do with outsiders of that sort. Or with crooks, whether blue- or white-collar. Or with spiritual phonies, for that matter. You'd have to leave the world entirely to do that! ... I'm not responsible for what the outsiders do, but don't we have some responsibility for those within our community of believers? God decides on the outsiders, but we need to decide when our brothers and sisters are out of line and, if necessary, clean house. (I Cor. 5:9-13, The Message)

Paul's point is this: Be strict with yourselves, expecting fellow Christians to obey the demands of Jesus. But don't hold others to the same rules.

I think these verses can show Christians the way forward in today's America. We need to find a way to live in a pluralistic society without engaging in an arms race with those who are not Christians.

I recently saw a beautiful example of how Christians can love their neighbors, offering a compelling invitation to the kingdom of God at a banquet for a Christian homeless ministry, the Bread of Life Mission in Seattle.

A man spoke to those present that night about his life of the streets and the addiction that cost him his job, his family, and his self respect. "I was on drugs, sleeping under the bridge," he said. Just eight months ago, he visited the mission in order to get a free wool hat. He decided to accept the offer to help him get off the streets. Next he wheeled in the shopping cart that once carried all of his belongings, and he held up a cardboard sign. On it, he had written, "I don't live here anymore." He was about to graduate from the Bread of Life discipleship program and would soon be living on his own with his own roof over his head. He showed us a picture of himself while he lived on the street. "I gave my life to Christ," he said. "The man you see here tonight is a different person altogether."

What I witnessed at the Bread of Life Mission is a perfect example of Jesus' calling for Christians today. In Matthew 25, Jesus says that those who enter his kingdom will be people who feed the hungry, welcome strangers, clothe the naked, care for the sick, and visit the prisoners.

In his book, UnChristian, David Kinnaman cites a Barna Research study that asked non-Christians whether they viewed the role of Christians in American society in a favorable or unfavorable way. In 1996, 85% viewed Christians favorably. Ten years later, that approval rating had dropped to just 15%. When people were asked to describe Christians, adjectives like, judgmental, hypocritical, close-minded, insensitive, too critical and too political were most often cited. We might contrast this list with what the Apostle Paul in Galatians listed as the 'fruits of the Spirit': "love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control."

"Against such things," Paul exhorted, "there is no law."

There isn't any question that American culture is in a transition from a dominantly Christian culture to a dominantly secular culture. We can no longer expect America society to uniformly embrace Christian values or morality. How the Christian community chooses to respond to this will be critical. Angry rhetoric, and bitterly contested lawsuits and elections create adversaries, but no one ever made an enemy by offering the hand of friendship, helping the down and out, mentoring kids, giving generously to others or helping people after a hurricane get their lives back together. Paul was right - "against such things, there is no law".

Special Education teachers are an aging population: Local schools ...

California is currently facing as shortage of qualified teachers ? including special education teachers ? according to an article printed in September on US News on NBCNews.com.

The article cited a report, ?Greatness by Design? released by the California Department of Education in September ? a report designed to help improve how teachers are recruited, trained and mentored ? that states ?there are still shortages of qualified teachers in fields such as special education.?

Dr. Pia Wong, department chair for the Department of Teaching Credentials and professor at California State University Sacramento, says one reason for the shortage is teachers retiring without anyone to fill their positions. ?When you look at the average age of teachers in special (education) and general education, it?s an aging population,? she explains. ?Based on when people typically do retire or can retire, we know in the next 10 years we?re going to see very high numbers of retirement.?

Another reason, says Dr. Wong, is a growth in the population of students who qualify for special education services due to better diagnostic processes. ?Because we have better tools for understanding the special needs that students have, there?s more students that are identified and therefore that creates a need for special programs, special classes, specialized teachers,? she says.

So what does this mean for Sacramento?

Inclusion Practice at SCUSD

In Sacramento City Unified School District, Director of Special Education Becky Bryant says there?s not a shortage of special education teachers overall, but there is a shortage in certain types of special education specialties, such as speech and language pathologists and occupational therapists.

Overall, Bryant says the amount of special education teachers they have is cyclical and will depend on the number of retirees they have each year and if there are new teachers coming to replace them. ?Because Sacramento is the capitol, we have a lot of people that kind of move in and out because they have to relocate or something,? she adds.

According to Bryant, SCUSD employs 260 special education teachers and serves 88 schools plus charter schools. She says there are resource specialist programs at all school sites, and throughout the district there are special day programs.

Bryant says SCUSD is in the third year of implementation of an Inclusive Practice program at six schools in the district ? C.K. McClatchy High School, California Middle School, Sutterville Elementary, Oak Ridge Elementary, Leataata Floyd Elementary, and Caleb Greenwood K-8 School. Through this model, says Bryant, students who would have been in a traditional special day class setting are now in general education, and the general educator and special education teacher co-teach together to provide instruction to all students in the classroom.

According to Bryant, Inclusive Practice helps teach students skills they will need when they become adults and enter into a diverse society, and it allows all students to learn together and be part of a community. ?It?s not about singling out students with disabilities and sending them somewhere else,? she adds.

Special Programs & Inclusion at SJUSD

Over at San Juan Unified School District (SJUSD), Dayle Cantrall, program manager for special education, believes that special education is a growing need because there is not always a pool of credentialed teachers at the ready to fill any holes they may have. ?When we have credentialed teachers, they usually end up in a job and they stay ? they don?t face layoffs like general education teachers do, they?re always in high demand,? she adds.

According to Cantrall, SJUSD currently employs 307 special education teachers, including speech therapists and adaptive PE teachers. She says there is at a minimum a half-time resource teacher at every school site, and some high schools have upwards to nine special education teachers at a school site. And special education students range from those that need speech therapy to specialized programs for severe autism and the deaf and hard-of-hearing.

Cantrall says recent changes in special education programs at SJUSD include specialized programming for severe autism students and a new transition center for kids ages 18-22 this year.

Additionally, there are specialized inclusion programs from elementary through high school on a few campuses in the district, says Cantrall. ?We have support built into the particular campuses, including increased number of instructional assistants,? she explains. Plus some campuses also have the capability for a special education student to attend the same school as their brothers and sisters through the support of ?roving inclusion teachers? and resources teachers.

What It Takes

To help ensure there are qualified special education teachers for California schools, Dr. Wong says one thing CSUS has done is advocate for an admission cycle for the special education credential program every semester. Additionally, faculty has been active in securing grants from the federal government to help candidates interested in pursuing the special education credential.

For those considering becoming certified to become a special education teacher, Dr. Wong suggests they look into it by doing some research and visiting some classrooms. ?I think people may have certain preconceptions about what it means to teach students with special needs,? she explains. ?I think if they were to visit some classrooms, they would really see some positive, exciting things happen and maybe find it?s something that attracts them.?

Bryant says they look to hire special education teachers who have a passion for kids in general, and a passion to work with students with disabilities. ?(We look for) people who have a clear understanding of how to manage a classroom, how to motivate kids, and who are really willing to work on creating relationships with kids,? she adds.

And Cantrall says if you have a calling to work with at-risk kids, you?re not afraid to collaborate, think outside the box, and do what?s needed to meet the best interests of that child?s needs ? go for it. ?We need people in special education who are not only dedicated to kids, but dedicated to paving the way so those kids can continue to learn in the least restrictive environment possible,? she says.

Where to Look for New Business (and Domain) Name Inspirations ...

What's in a name? Well, when it comes to business, it's (almost) everything. Sure, some of you will say "Well, all depends on the quality of products and services..." But offering your top-notch products/services under a bad brand name won't help, at all.

And in today's business world where online and off line business intersect, having a great company and/or product name is not enough; you also need to have great domain name to represent your brand online.

For example: Who Represents is a great site where you can find agents representing celebrities. A decent business name, but how about the domain name? Well, here it is: www.whorepresents.com - Whore? Oh my. Not. Good. At. All. Here's another one, for your entertainment: Speed of Art is a quirky site for designers - but the domain name is even quirkier (or funnier?) www.speedofart.com - Art... or Fart? Lol...

The bottom line, choosing your domain name is as important as the business naming itself.

Now, the next question is, where to look for a good business/domain name? Here are the web tools I regularly visit to get ideas on new business and domain name ideas...

1. Panabee

Panabee is probably the most underrated business name idea tools. It is by far the best business, app and/or domain name suggestion tools, in my opinion.

I use Panabee for brainstorming for my next projects' naming idea. I launch websites - so I want both website brand name and domain name to look great. Panabee can offer me just that.

Just type in your keyword or any words you want as your business name, and Panabee will return you various resources: Domain name suggestions (including the availability,) alternative/related words, how the words are used on Facebook and Twitter, and so on.

Panabee's owners must be humorous people - want the web's best FAQ? Check out Panabee's.

2. Dot-o-mator

In essence, Dot-o-mator is a domain (and business) name generator. There are some similar alternatives, make it not a really unique solution - but quite powerful, I think; that's what matter most.

Just enter a combination of words from categories you choose and there you go - you will get recommendations. There's a scratchboard on which you can take note on domain names you are interested in.

A pretty fun and useful tool is Dot-o-mator's Web 2.0 name generator. If you are looking for a cool name for your web business startup, use this tool: Just hit "Generate names!" button and then you are recommended a "Web 2.0" business name, which you can check the domain name availability.

3. Impossibility!

Impossibility! does one and only one thing best: It helps you generate dot-com-only domain names AND shows you their availability. You can choose to register via their links to Godaddy or Namecheap (affiliate links) or simply copy and paste the name and register the domain name yourself - your choice.

4. Bust a Name

Bust a Name is offering similar services to Dot-o-mator, only more comprehensive (read: better service) in nature: Entering words into the search bar, you will then suggested similar words - including adding prefix, suffix, hyphens, and such. You can also get a list of available domain names to register, and save ideas. Bust a Name takes things a bit further: You can register domain in various extensions, such as dot-com, dot-net, dot-org, dot-info and dot-biz; you can sort the available domain names, and register to Bust a Name's affiliated registrars if you want to.

Bust a Name also sports a cool feature: Domain maker, basically giving you a tool to generate domain names based on a single keyword. You'll be suggested a list of domain names according to your specs; this is a great tool to find for business or app name, too.

5. NameStation

NameStation looks pretty similar to the 4 tools I mentioned above, but once you start use the tool, you will realize that it offers a different kind of tools. Firstly, just enter your keywords and you'll be suggested a strong list of available domain names - in various extensions, including country-specific domain names. You can also mix and match keywords the way you want it: Randomize, combine keywords, blend keywords, and so on.

Probably the best feature is the ability for users to launch and participate in the naming contests. This feature is great for brainstorming ideas.

You need to register to use the tool - but that shouldn't hinder you from enjoying the benefits of the tool.

So, there you go - top 5 domain/business name generators you can use for free. If you have any recommendations, please share with us.

What Gaza fighting taught Israel about possible war with Iran - World ...

The truce is strained when Israeli forces fire on a protest by Palestinians seeking access to fertile land close to the Gaza border. NBC's Ayman Moyheldin reports

By Martin Fletcher, NBC News

News analysis

ASHKELON, Israel ? Israel's warplanes and Iron Dome anti-rocket missiles have been facing south for eight days, but their message was heard loud and clear to the north ? by leaders in Iran and Lebanon.?

The fighting against Hamas in Gaza, carried out by mostly missiles and planes, can be seen as a war game for what could happen if Israel moved to take out Iran's nuclear program, a much larger action that could result in both Hezbollah in Lebanon and Iran firing rockets toward Tel Aviv.

And violent as it has been, one?Israeli?general described Hamas, when comparing its might to Hezbollah and Iran, as a rain drop in a storm.

In other words, there's worse to come if Israel attacks Iran, much worse.

Israel declares mission accomplished, Hamas claims victory

So, what, if any, lessons did Israel learn that can be applied to Iran?

Homefront
The most obvious concerns the endurance of Israel's "homefront," which is simply a military, dehumanizing term for "the people." Verdict: good. ?

There were almost no complaints by the people that they had to spend so long in bomb shelters. Southern towns like Ofakim, Ashkelon, Beer Sheva and even Ashdod closer to the center were attacked about a 150 times each in seven days. That means the people rushed to their shelters as the sirens wailed on average 21 times a day.

Yet despite the discomfort and fear, most people did not call for an end to Israel's assault on Gaza. They wanted it to last as long as necessary to stop all rockets from Gaza in the future.

Iron Dome
The Iron Dome, Israel's home-made anti-rocket missile system, Israel's key defense against rockets from Gaza prevented carnage. Verdict: Very good with an official hit rate of 84 percent.

According to Israeli army figures, Islamist militants in Gaza fired 1,506 rockets at Israel in eight days. Eight hundred and seventy-five fell harmlessly into open areas like fields and the sea. The Iron Dome is programmed to let those alone and to intercept only rockets that would hit urban areas.

Shops and stores are reopening and a semblance of normalcy is returning to Gaza's streets after a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas is put into effect. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports from Gaza.

Iron Dome intercepted 421 rockets and 58 rockets actually got through, killing three civilians and wounding about 100 more, mostly lightly.

How Israel's 'Iron Dome' intercepts incoming rockets in Gaza conflict

Shelters
The small number of casualties was because a few people?did not use?Israel's second defense layer, the bomb shelters. Verdict: Very good.?

Nobody in a shelter was hurt. The three killed did not do as they were advised and stood on their balcony watching the action. A rocket shot right through the window, splattering them against the walls.?

But?while the world has been watching the war in the south, the threat from the north is much bigger. Israeli intelligence sources say Hamas and partners in Gaza had 10,000 rockets. Hezbollah in South Lebanon has between 100,000 and 200,000,?including longer range rockets that carry heavier explosive warheads,?according to Israeli military analysts.

The Iron Dome could be effective against several fired at the same time and even a dozen or two, but if hundreds of long-range rockets are fired, for instance, at Israel's largest population center Tel Aviv, it is guaranteed that many would get through, causing havoc, heavy damage and possibly loss of life.

Israel needs America
How long could the homefront, or the people, withstand such an onslaught, especially if?compounded?by rockets from Iran?

The answer is not clear, but what is clear is that such an attack from Lebanon would provoke instant and massive Israeli retaliation.

That leads to another lesson, or rather byproduct, of the assault on Hamas ? Hamas may already be eliminated from the equation of a post-Iran strike. Would Hamas fight for Iran after the punishment it received in the past week and the depletion of its rocket supply and rocket-manufacturing ability??Nobody?knows.?

Two sides exchange deadly airstrikes, rocket attacks.

Shot dead, dragged through the streets: The fate of an alleged spy in Gaza

More likely is that Islamic Jihad, which is armed, trained and financed by Tehran, would fire its rockets at Israel, even if Hamas tried to stop them. So another lesson for Israel: Take out Islamic Jihad in Gaza ? and that could lead to conflict with Hamas anyway.

But as political and military leaders here analyze the results and lessons of the past week, the clearest lesson is probably this, and it is hardly new: Israel needs the United States.

It was President Barack Obama who insisted on a cease-fire, who called Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi three times in 24 hours, and who had several calls with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,?shepherding?both through the difficult process of reaching an agreement.

Americans tied to Israel caught in the chaos of Gaza conflict

The fact is,?Israel could not have carried out an invasion of Gaza without Washington's support. And as Obama made clear in his talks with Netanyahu, the United States prefers no ground invasion. And?Israel agreed. ?

So at the moment, Israel has Western support for latest action in Gaza. This support would evaporate if it decided unilaterally to invade Gaza.?

If the cease-fire holds for 24 hours, Israel will start talking about lifting border control on Gaza. In the meantime, Israeli ground troops remain mobilized in case Hamas resumes rocket attacks from Gaza. NBC's Andrea Mitchell reports.

But if newly re-elected Obama says the same about an attack on Iran, only more forcibly, will Israel agree again?

That is a different issue. Israel's homefront and defensive shield give Israel's freedom to act, but the bit questions are, for how long? And against what strength enemy?

And critical will be this: Will Obama be for or against?
