Are you a consumer, rather than a praciticioner? | The Anchor ...

I read this blog post last week that is written from an ?American Christian? perspective but I challenge you to find the difference between our Christian culture and theirs. Here is some terrific and convicting insight from Pastor Dave:

Yesterday, I read a report about an Ohio State University study involving 900 adults ranging in age from 18 to 90 which claimed that young Americans place such a high value on their sense of self-worth that they crave praise and compliments more than food, friendship, and sex! The study also observed that this craving is akin to an addiction. It is insatiable. The participants in the study are not all narcissists, of course, but they?re kissin? cousins.

The professor who conducted the study identified the 1969 book The Psychology of Self-Esteem as the launching point for a generation of Americans obsessed with self-esteem. He concluded that the obsession is only going to get worse ? ?as each new generation enters a culture that puts a premium on self-worth, younger Americans spend more time craving and searching for self-esteem boosts?and less time thinking about others. All that time spent thinking about yourself not only contributes to depression, but it makes society a less kind and gentle place.?

The seismic shift that began in 1969 has resulted in the tsunamis of Facebook, Pinterest, YouTube, reality TV shows and life-enhancement church services. Americans just can?t seem to get enough of being true to self, expressing self, fulfilling self, improving self and advancing self. This addiction has had an enormous impact on the Christian community. Choosing a church to attend is no longer a matter of finding where the Word of God is taught and where people are striving to live in a manner that pleases God. It is now a matter of finding a church that has the best programs, preferred music, and activities.

American Christians have become consumers rather than practitioners. We look for the?most enjoyable services, the most convenient schedules, the most engaging presentations, and the programs that fulfill our desires to the greatest degree. We seem drawn to the churches that are most like the world. Our primary concern about church is not how we can serve the church body, but how the church body can serve us.

Churches that are preaching that Christians are deserving of and entitled to good things, happiness, blessings, and personal fulfillment are bursting at the seams. Churches that preach poorness in spirit, mournfulness for sin, meekness, purity in heart, and a hunger for righteousness, are struggling to find people willing to listen. Are we witnessing the fulfillment of Paul?s warning to Timothy, ?For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.?

We can?t be hungry for righteousness and addicted to self at the same time.

Turkish PM: Too soon to call for Syria no-fly zone

BERLIN (AP) ? Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday it is up to the U.N. Security Council to decide whether a no-fly zone should be imposed on Syria or safe areas created for people fleeing the civil war.

His comments during a visit to Germany appeared more moderate than previous calls from Turkey for international action to stop the bloodshed in Syria.

In August, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu tried but failed to persuade the Security Council to set up a safe haven inside Syria to protect thousands of people fleeing the bloody conflict between rebel groups and forces loyal to President Bashar Assad.

Asked whether 19 months into the conflict the time has come to create safe havens for Syrian civilians or a no-fly zone ? as was imposed on Moammar Gadhafi's Libya and Saddam Hussein's Iraq ? Erdogan refrained from calling for such a step.

"This subject is something for the U.N. Security Council to decide," he said. "If the U.N. hasn't made this decision, we have no authority, no right to declare such a zone in northern Syria."

The experience of imposing a no-fly zone over Iraq had shown it came at a high price, he added.

Speaking after a meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, Erdogan indicated that Turkey wants greater diplomatic support from Germany in dealing with Russia and China on Syria.

Moscow and Beijing ? both permanent members of the U.N. Security Council ? have consistently blocked resolutions that would put pressure on the Assad regime.

Turkey has received some 105,000 Syrian refugees since March 2011, and millions more are displaced within Syria, Erdogan said, calling the conflict a "catastrophe."

Merkel praised Ankara's efforts for the refugees, saying they represent "a very real burden for Turkey" and Germany is prepared to provide further humanitarian assistance.

She also reiterated NATO's backing for Turkey, a member of the alliance, and lauded the country's "sober" response to cross-border incidents.

Turkey reinforced its border with anti-aircraft missiles after Syrian forces brought down a Turkish jet on June 22 and threatened to target any military "elements" approaching from Syria.

More recently, Ankara returned fire several times after mortars were fired into its territory from Syria.

As Coasts Flood, Inland Areas See Blizzards

Sandy has created havoc up and down the East Coast, but it's now causing blizzards inland as well. Steve Inskeep speaks with NPR's Jon Hamilton to explain that and the science behind the storm; and to NPR's Dan Charles in West Virginia, where snow has blanketed part of the state.

Copyright ? 2012 National Public Radio. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

STEVE INSKEEP, HOST:

It's MORNING EDITION, from NPR News. Good morning. I'm Steve Inskeep.

RENEE MONTAGNE, HOST:

And I'm Renee Montagne.

As Hurricane Sandy, or whether - at this point in time, it's Superstorm Sandy, when it did thunder ashore as a hurricane, Tamara Brownstein(ph) was assessing the damage. She was working for the Red Cross in Sea Bright, New Jersey.

TAMARA BROWNSTEIN: And we saw a transformer blow, which just kind of lit up the sky. And then everything went black. And so from there, we just came straight back and we've kind of been hunkering down ever since, which is exactly what we've been telling people in the area to do, as well, because the number one priority is just safety.

INSKEEP: Now, in New York City overnight some people who stayed home had to be rescued. WABC reporter Jeff Pegues watched firefighters working in flooded areas of Queens.

JEFF PEGUES: Some of these members of the specialized unit had to climb walls of building, break through windows to reach these families in their apartments. And then they led them downstairs, out into the water.

MONTAGNE: Now, the storm is spreading inland, with effects on many states, including West Virginia, where NPR's Dan Charles is standing by.

And, Dan, good morning.

DAN CHARLES, BYLINE: Good morning.

MONTAGNE: What are you seeing there?

CHARLES: We have a blizzard warning, here. I'm in southern West Virginia in the town of Beckley. It's kind of coalmining country down here. It's snowing. It's blowing, although not really hard at the moment. I had to help push a pickup truck out of snow this morning. There's a foot of snow on the ground already, and more to come.

MONTAGNE: And snow is not unusual there, I gather, but maybe a little more unusual in October. So are people prepared?

CHARLES: People were pretty fatalistic about it. I mean, they've dealt with storms like this, at least of this magnitude before, plenty of times. Yeah, the crazy thing is it's October, and there are high winds and there is the risk of flooding down the way.

You know, there's power out for tens of thousands of people in the state, some of that from the wind, some of that just from snow weighing down branches of trees. Shelters are open. Roads are treacherous. The interstate is still passable, although much of it is covered with snow south of Charleston. But people - I have to say, people are pretty much coping.

MONTAGNE: So, and then just quickly, first responders managing to get in there and start helping?

CHARLES: They seem to be. They seem to be. No major sort of problems, other than kind of routine winter storm emergency.

INSKEEP: OK. Dan, stay with us. We're going to bring in NPR's Jon Hamilton, who's with us here in the studio.

And, Jon, will you paint a picture for us? We've got this storm that's coming in off the Atlantic. What are the mechanics? How does it end up pulling a snowstorm down in West Virginia?

JON HAMILTON, BYLINE: OK. So it started out as a hurricane, which is a counterclockwise-rotating storm. And it is still rotating counterclockwise, except it keeps getting bigger. So if you imagine, say, a skater extending their arms outward and outward. Right now, those arms would be brushing Canada at the top and North Carolina at the south. And imagine their fingers pulling huge bunches of cold air and moisture down from Canada and depositing it in West Virginia in the form of snow.

INSKEEP: And so you have trouble then - potential trouble, anyway - all the way through the Midwest and down to West Virginia, even beyond?

HAMILTON: A huge area of the country, yes.

INSKEEP: And this is highly unusual for this early in the season, I would think.

HAMILTON: It's pretty unusual to see a storm that has rotation that big.

INSKEEP: I can't remember, actually, a storm that looks this large on the radar. I mean, that image that you give is just kind of amazing to look at when you see the radar image.

HAMILTON: I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it.

INSKEEP: So, Dan Charles, coming back to you in West Virginia, you said the roads are treacherous there. So there's already some snow down at this point, is what you're saying.

CHARLES: Oh, lots. There's a foot of snow on the ground here in Beckley. Lots of things are closed, although I noticed Mountain State University, they're opening today, but two hours late. But they're telling people pretty much if you don't have to go out, don't go out on the roads today.

INSKEEP: Impressed that they're going to try to open at all. So, a foot of snow on the ground. And how much more are forecasters saying that you should expect there in Beckley, West Virginia?

CHARLES: It could be as much as another foot.

INSKEEP: OK. Well, we'll be following that. Dan, thanks very much.

CHARLES: Thank you.

INSKEEP: That's NPR's Dan Charles in Beckley, West Virginia. We're also listening to NPR's Jon Hamilton as we continue to track Hurricane Sandy, what we're now calling Superstorm Sandy.

Storm damages space shuttle Enterprise

Space shuttle Enterprise, NASA's original prototype orbiter, is sitting exposed and appears to have been partially damaged by Hurricane Sandy after the severe storm passed over New York City on Monday night.

On public display aboard the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, a converted aircraft carrier, since July, Enterprise had been protected from the elements inside a pressurized pavilion. Based on photos posted online, the inflatable structure appears to have first deflated and then been torn by the winds of the now post-tropical storm cyclone.

Photographs show the 180-foot-long (55 meters) by 60-foot-high (18 meters) pavilion's cloth exterior now lies draped over Enterprise, although much of the shuttle's nose section and part of its payload bay is uncovered. The orbiter's vertical stabilizer, or tail, is protruding out of the top of the fabric, where it appears part of the spacecraft has been torn away.

Intrepid officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Humanity has long dreamed of putting boots on Mars, but those boots have the potential to stomp all over any lifeforms that may exist on the Red Planet.

The "superstorm" Sandy flooded Pier 86, where the Intrepid is anchored, submerging part of the museum's main entrance under water. Similar extensive damage was seen throughout the city and region, leaving buildings destroyed, millions of people without power and at scores dead. [ Superstorm from Space: Hurricane Sandy Satellite Photos ]

Enterprise was delivered to the Intrepid in June after being transferred from its previous home at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in northern Virginia. In its place, the retired space shuttle Discovery is now on display at the Udvar-Hazy Center, having arrived in April after NASA retired its 30-year shuttle program in 2011.

Discovery was also in Sandy's path, and the Smithsonian remains closed due to the storm. However, no damage to that orbiter was reported, nor was any damage evident on webcam footage of the shuttle.

Enterprise, built in the 1970s, never made it to space, but it was used as a prototype to test the space shuttle design during approach-and-landing glide tests.

Since its arrival at the Intrepid, Enterprise has been housed in its climate-controlled steel-and-fabric "Space Shuttle Pavilion." This shelter was never meant to be permanent, however. Eventually, Intrepid plans to build a larger facility to showcase the shuttle and enhance its other space exhibits and educational displays.

As of Tuesday morning, superstorm Sandy was centered about 120 miles (190 kilometers) east-southeast of Pittsburgh, slowly moving westward and weakening over Pennsylvania, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami.

Commodity Trade: Guide To Investing In Cocoa (NYSEARCA:NIB ...

Carolyn Pairitz:?The commodity?cocoa, refers to cocoa beans, which are the dried seeds from the,?Theobroma Cacao, or cocoa tree. The tree is native to the Americas, specifically the Southern Hemisphere, and has been a major part of the area?s history, though now the vast majority of the trees exist in West Africa. In fact, cocoa beans were used as a common currency in many areas prior to the Spanish conquest. Now, cocoa is used all over the world to create chocolate, and other products such as cocoa butter. Many consume cocoa beans because of the benefits associated with them, as they are thought to have positive effects on cardiovascular health among other things. As an investment, cocoa has become a popular?commodity?for investors looking to cash in on the sweet gains it can provide?[for more cocoa news and analysis subscribe to our?free newsletter].?

Physical Properties And Uses Of Cocoa

Cocoa trees require a warm climate to thrive, specifically within 20 degrees north or south of the equator. There are two different types of cocoa plants: Criollo and Forastero, with Criollo being the most sensitive to weather conditions, making it more difficult to grow and harvest properly. The cocoa trees take approximately five years to reach maturity, and each tree can produce roughly 2.2 pounds of cocoa. The cocoa beans themselves are about 3 cm thick with the center filled with a sweet pulp called mucilaginous. The seeds are typically white, though they turn a reddish brown color during the drying process [see also?Commodity Investing: Physical vs. Futures].

The most visible use of cocoa beans is present in candies and beverages, most often chocolate. But, cocoa bean can also be used to make cocoa butter, which is used for many pharmaceutical drugs, as it makes for a nice substance to encapsulate various substances. Cocoa beans are also present in cosmetics, including various kinds of makeup, lotions, and soaps because of its?coveted?moisturizing?properties.

Cocoa Supply And Demand

Cocoa bean production is dominated by?emerging and frontier markets,?primarily?countries in Africa. Cote d?Ivoire (The Ivory Coast), Indonesia, and Ghana are the top three producers worldwide, with the Ivory Coast nearly doubling the output of the second place Indonesia. Though Africa dominates cocoa production, holding roughly 70% of the market share collectively, Latin America also accounts for a substantial portion of output thanks to Brazil, Ecuador, Dominican Republic, and Peru.

Top Cocoa Bean Producers: 2010
Rank Area Production (Int $1000)
1 C?te d?Ivoire 1,290103
2 Indonesia 877,134
3 Ghana 656,362
4 Nigeria 373,855
5 Cameroon 274,240
6 Brazil 244,448
7 Ecuador 137,184
8 Togo 105,406
9 Dominican Republic 60,579
10 Peru 48,407

From a consumption standpoint, the country list is the polar opposite of the producing markets, the top five being the U.S., Netherlands, Germany, France, and Brazil. Because the consumers and producers are in vastly different areas and economies, cocoa beans can see dramatic price changes [see alsoWhy Commodities Belong In Your Portfolio].

Cocoa Price Drivers

As a global commodity, the price of cocoa is impacted by a number of factors, and is often subject to significant price swings in a relatively short period of time. The major price drivers of cocoa include:

  • Weather Conditions:?Like most?agricultural commodities, cocoa is subject to adverse weather conditions. Any unforeseen extreme weather pattern can set off supply issues sending cocoa prices soaring.
  • Geopolitical Tensions:?With the major cocoa-producing nations being emerging and frontier markets, the supply of this crop can be easily bottlenecked by the combustible political situations that often characterize these nations.
  • Climate Shifts:?While most plants are pollinated by bees or butterflies, the cocoa flower is pollinated by midges, small flies, or by hand. Any kind of global climate shifts could drastically throw off the natural pollination of this plant. Also, as previously mentioned, cocoa trees require very specific?environmental conditions?for healthy growth, and a subtle shift in an area?s climate could make a huge difference in the industry.
  • Labor:?Unfortunately, numerous cocoa plants are harvested by child labor. In fact, in 2005 it was estimated that over 200,000 children were working in substandard conditions in cocoa fields. As of 2011 active programs in almost 300 cocoa cultivating communities in Ghana and the Cote d?Ivoire have caused a migration to the region of adults looking for work.?Because this crop relies heavily on?cheap labor, these changes and new regulations on how the crop is produced, and who does it, the price of cocoa is now at its highest level since its transition from delicacy to every day treat in the 80?s.

Investing in Cocoa

The investment thesis behind cocoa, is that this global commodity can be used to?hedge against inflation?as well as numerous other factors. Because the majority of the world?s cocoa supply is dependent on international markets, a cocoa investment can be a play on political relationships on some of these volatile nations. Below we outline numerous ways to add cocoa exposure to your portfolio:

Cocoa Futures

Cocoa futures are traded on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange under the symbol CJ, with prices quoted in U.S. Dollars and Cents per pound. A single contract represents 10 metric tons of cocoa with a minimum fluctuation of $1.00 per ton. Trading is conducted in the March, May, July, September, and December cycle for the next 23 months. All contracts are subject to the?rules and regulations of NYMEX. Trading terminates on the day immediately preceding the first notice day of the corresponding trading month of Cocoa futures at ICE Futures U.S.

Cocoa ETFs

There are currently two ETFs that offers exposure to cocoa, both through Barclays iPath. The iPath Dow Jones-UBS Cocoa Total Return Sub-IndexSM ETN (NYSEARCA:NIB) tracks a is a single-commodity sub-index currently consisting of one futures contract on the commodity of cocoa, while the Pure Beta Cocoa ETN (NYSEARCA:CHOC) is comprised of a single exchange traded future at a time but with contango reducing technology [see also?Which Cocoa ETF Is Right For You? Top 5 Tech Tools to Organize Your Life | Home | GalTime

As I drag myself away from whiling away another hour clicking through Pinterest and dreaming of crafts and projects I am surely never going to actually do, I have to chuckle a bit at the strange dichotomy that is technology. It can be a huge black hole for those of us easily distracted by all things shiny, and yet it offers an amazing array of tools to stay organized, connected and efficient. From online calendars to menu planners to interactive to-dos and reminders, here are some of the best tools and resources to help keep you organized and on track. Whenever you can drag yourself away from that game you?re playing on Facebook, that is.

Oh, and even better: they?re all free.

The Incredible Synching Online Calendar ? Google Calendar

An online calendar with electronic reminders is an amazing tool. The last time I forgot a dentist appointment, only to be told it would be five months before I could get back on the schedule, I immediately installed Google Calendar on my smartphone. I synced across all my devices so no matter where I am I will, by golly, get that reminder to pick up the dog from the groomer. I have the family calendar sync with my husband?s phone as well so that he doesn?t miss out on the preschool open house or double book date night.

All you need to get started is a Gmail account. There are a multitude of Google Calendar apps that make it compatible with just about every device imaginable so you can add, view and edit events on the go. Have reminders sent to you via text or email. Color code events so work appointments stand apart from Jill?s upcoming soccer game; share your calendar with others; set up recurring events so you don?t have to remember to give the dog her flea treatment every month. Frankly, it?s the only way I ever make it where I need to be within a rough ballpark of the time I am expected.

Be a Task Master ? Remember the Milk

On the surface it appears to be a relatively simplistic online to-do list. The interface is basic with a few bells and whistles, yet Remember the Milk ?is a powerful tool to help you organize and manage your life. View tasks by due date (today, tomorrow, overdue, etc) or categorize tasks into lists and sort by work project, home maintenance, or self preservation (what else would you call a reminder that schedules a pedicure or organize a night out with the girls?).? Share or publish individual tasks or project lists so that you can work together with coworkers, or have hubby?s phone remind him to take out the trash so you don?t have to.

With apps for iOS (iPhone and iPad) and Android, you can manage tasks on the go. Sync with Google Calendar and have reminders sent via email, text or IM. Easily create recurring tasks so that you don?t forget to water the plants on Tuesday or pay your mortgage on time. You can even view location-specific tasks on a map so you can see if there?s anything else you can check of your list while you?re in the neighborhood.

The Family Tracker ? Cozi

Cozi ?is a great free calendar, task and to-do list application geared toward families. Cozi has a multitude of easy to use features that automatically sync between every computer and mobile device in your busy household.?

Use the online list feature to create a family to-do viewable by everyone you connect to your Cozi account. For instance, make up individual to-do lists for each family member, an up-to-date, accessible anywhere emergency contact list, vacation pack list... the possibilities are endless. There?s a grocery shopping list with pre-filled common items, or add your own, that can be updated by anyone in the family and then sent to you via text or email when you?re ready to head to the store.

Related:?Top 10 Ways to Keep Your Kids Safe on Their Cell

The family calendar allows you to color code appointments by family member, and then choose to see individual calendars or the whole family?s schedule at once.? A super handy text translator feature takes ?Meet with plumber next Thursday at 10,? and automatically adds an appointment titled ?Meet with plumber? in the right place on your calendar.?

Reminders can be sent to your mobile phone or email, and the calendar is easily printable for kids that aren?t yet web-connected. Cozi syncs with Outlook while selectively adding only those appointments that fall out of normal business hours, so your husband will always know when you need to work late, without also being reminded of your lunch meeting with the boss. Your calendar and lists can be viewed and modified on any mobile device by logging into the website, or downloading the app onto your iPhone or Android. Now there?s no excuse for missing Sparky?s next vaccination appointment, much to his chagrin.

Manage Your Money - Mint.com

If you have a relatively straight forward financial situation, with bank accounts and loans through traditional banking institutions, a free online financial management resource like Mint ?can make budgeting and controlling your money a snap. Once you set up a free account with your name and email, simply enter the online login information for your various bank accounts, credit cards, investment accounts and loans, and Mint will retrieve and consolidate your current balance and transaction history.? From that point on it will automatically keep your accounts up to date, with the only manual entry from you being to classify expenses it doesn?t recognize (it auto-categorizes what it can).?

Quickly and easily set customized goals for anything from paying off a debt to funding your retirement, so you can see how much you need to set aside each month to reach short and long term goals. It even suggests ways you may be able to save money by making easy changes or transferring your accounts to institutions with lower fees.

Corral your Kitchen ? Kitchenmonki.com

As much as the plan on Sunday night is to eat at home every day next week, come Wednesday you inevitably open the fridge pondering, what do I have ingredients and time to make? Chinese takeout beckons and your exhausted brain steers you to pick up the phone and dial before you can pull out that ?5 ingredients or less? cookbook.? If this sounds like a typical weeknight at your house, check out Kitchen Monki.?

Hurricane forces NYSE to shutter on Monday

NEW YORK (AP) ? The New York Stock Exchange and other U.S. financial markets are shutting down Monday as Hurricane Sandy bears down on the nation's largest city.

The NYSE's parent company said late Sunday that it had decided to close all of its markets the next day. The shutdown might be extended through Tuesday "pending confirmation," according to exchange operator NYSE Euronext.

The move was coordinated with other financial exchange operators, regulators and government officials, NYSE said. Nasdaq OMX Group said it is shutting down the Nasdaq stock market and its other U.S.-based exchanges and markets.

CME Group in Chicago will suspend trading of equity index futures and equity index options starting at 8:15 a.m. CDT. It had already announced the closing of the New York Mercantile Exchange, or NYMEX, whose trading floor is located inside a mandatory evacuation zone.

The companies cited concerns about the market's ability to function without disruption and the safety of people who work there.

Earlier Sunday, a key trade group recommended that bond trading close at noon on Monday. The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association said the early close should apply to all bonds that are denominated in U.S. dollars.

NYSE had said earlier Sunday that it would close its physical trading floor but allow electronic trading to continue. The shutdown announced later applies to all trading, including electronic orders.

Hurricane Sandy has caused the shutdown of transportation systems throughout the region. New York City's subways and buses shut down, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg ordered residents to evacuate some low-lying areas. City public schools are closed Monday.

Trading has rarely stopped for weather. A blizzard led to a late start and an early close on Jan. 8, 1996, according to the exchange's parent company, NYSE Euronext. The NYSE shut down on Sept. 27, 1985 for Hurricane Gloria.

Since the Great Depression, the longest suspension in trading at the NYSE occurred after the attacks on the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001, when the exchange closed for four days.

Sandy, a minimal but large hurricane, was blamed for 65 deaths in the Caribbean before it began churning up the Eastern Seaboard. It was expected to hook left toward the mid-Atlantic coast and come ashore late Monday or early Tuesday, most likely in New Jersey, colliding with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic.

Forecasters said the monster combination could bring close to a foot of rain, a potentially lethal storm surge and punishing winds extending hundreds of miles outward from the storm's center. It could also dump up to 2 feet of snow in Kentucky, North Carolina and West Virginia.

Looking For Suggestions On Internet Marketing? Look No Further ...

Don?t be intimidated by the complexity of internet marketing approaches; if you take the time to learn the ropes, your bottom line will greatly improve. Fear not because the following tips will help you become profitable with web marketing.

Google Ads are a smart start to any web marketing program and can shorten the wait time for profits. You?ll increase traffic to your website by buying ads targeting important keywords that potential buyers are looking for.

TIP! Work to engender trust among your visitors. If your readers consider you a useful source of information about a topic, they may repay you by buying products through your affiliate links.

You can offer your customers the chance to become one of your own affiliates. Whenever a customer makes a purchase, offer him or her the chance to become an affiliate for your business. You can make a single sale into thousands if you have a client that wants to become an affiliate. This increases both your audience and your profits.

Banner ads that include teasers such as a riddle or question can increase traffic to your website where you provide the answer. You will have people who will just have to click through on that banner advertisement to find the answer. You can also tempt your potential customers with a discount for correctly answering the question.

Affiliate websites differ greatly. Some can be hard or aggravating to navigate. Even if your site is not as efficiently designed as you would like, it is still possible to make money. These services are not only appreciated by visitors; they also enhance the webmaster?s reputation and encourage the visitors to become customers.

TIP! Check to see if any affiliate programs you participate in have referral programs. Some companies do offer better compensation for referrals.

Text services can work well for affiliate programs to generate income. Although this is a new service, many affiliates are already using it to communicate with customers as well as promote new affiliate offers and products.

Try and get a commission from every type of sale when you sign up with a particular affiliate company. Is the company able to track all kinds of orders accurately, such as fax, postal, and telephone orders? This way you will be able to receive all the income that you generate for your affiliates.

By creating special websites for affiliates, you can boost your sales. Presenting your affiliate program with clear, positive language will boost your affiliate numbers. Besides attracting additional customers, a properly optimized site can also attract additional affiliates.

TIP! After you have chosen the products you wish to promote, be sure that you are focusing your efforts on producing an appropriate audience. Products that do not cost a lot should not require a lot of marketing.

Stay away from filling your page with too many banners. Not only will your site look worse, but people will just stop visiting because you look unprofessional. Make sure that there is an abundant amount of content on your website. Design your website so that when someone visits it, their attention is immediately focused on the content, and not the banners.

In order for your online marketing effort to generate more revenue, punch up your review by adding media ? screenshots, videos, or anything that will show off the product. You will lure your customers in to make a buy. Go in-depth in your product summary. Include information on how you use the product as well as the results you have achieved.

TIP! Most of the people on your email list will end up unsubscribing and you will need to replace them with new customers. To get yourself new customers, send out your best e-mail formats to attract them via first contact.

It is becoming more and more rare for affiliate programs to pay lifetime commissions. Still, the rewards of lifetime commissions make them well worth seeking out. In the online marketing model, the vendor pays the affiliate for each customer that buys a product through the affiliate?s referral link. There is usually a set date where the commission will no longer be paid, if the customer makes their purchase beyond that date. The potential rewards are so great that it is worth it to find the rare lifetime commissions out there.

This article demonstrates that having success with online marketing isn?t quite as hard as it appears to be. There is a lot involved with it, but it is one of the best ways to turn a profit on the Internet. Online marketing can improve your business if you follow these tips.

Giants sweep Tigers for World Series title

DETROIT ? The end came much like this series, not with a boom, but with a little fly ball that fell through the 10th inning raindrops and onto the Comerica Park outfield grass for a single that would win the San Francisco Giants the 2012 World Series.

In a series where new heroes come nightly and from a roster of anonymous names, the star would be second baseman Marco Scutaro, whose fly ball fell in front of Detroit Tigers center fielder Austin Jackson. It scored journeyman infielder Ryan Theriot, who slid across home plate for what would be the winning run in a 4-3 victory in Game 4 on Sunday night.

And after closer Sergio Romo struck out Miguel Cabrera for the final out, the Giants raced to the center of the infield to celebrate their second World Series championship in three years. It's the franchise's seventh world title.

Pablo Sandoval was voted World Series MVP after batting 8 for 16 in four games, doing most of his damage in Game 1 with a historic three home-run performance.

As for the other big hitter entering this series, it was fitting that Cabrera was the final out Sunday. After all, it was the failure of Detroit's big hitters, primarily Cabrera and Prince Fielder, that led to the Tigers' demise in this series. Their silence had as much to do with San Francisco's sweep as the Giants' resourcefulness.

Like they have in this World Series, the Giants scored first on Sunday. Only unlike the other games, they couldn't hold onto the lead. Hunter Pence hit a fly ball in the second inning that rose high toward center field and carried over the heads of the outfielders before finally bouncing on the warning track and dropping over the fence for a double. The next hitter, Brandon Belt, hit a fly ball down the right field line that smacked against the fence. By the time the Tigers got the ball back to the field Belt had a triple, Pence had scored and San Francisco was up 1-0.

The lead disappeared an inning later when Austin Jackson walked and two batters later Cabrera hit what appeared to be a routine fly ball to right field that got caught in the roaring wind and carried and carried until it disappeared in the crowd for the Triple Crown winner's first home run of the World Series.

For Detroit, though, the problem was that pitcher Max Scherzer couldn't hold the 2-1 lead. In the top of the sixth he gave up a single to Scutaro and then two batters later he got a 1-0 changeup over the middle of the plate and Giants catcher Buster Posey pulled it down the left-field line. The ball curled just inside the foul pole for a home run that sent the San Francisco players running and jumping in their dugout.

The 3-2 lead lasted two batters into the bottom of the inning when Delmon Young hit a home run to right to tie the game at 3-3, where the game would be stuck until Theriot and Scutaro won it in the 10th inning.

"It was freaky. I would've never guessed it," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said of his team's inglorious demise in a postgame TV interview. "There was nothing flukey about it."

Obama, Romney line up elite lawyers for potential election disputes

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As President Barack Obama and Republican Mitt Romney scramble to come out ahead in the November 6 election, two other men are preparing for a legal showdown that could begin the next day.

They are the lawyers who have been tapped by the Obama and Romney teams to navigate any legal challenges to voting procedures or results in a tight contest that could dredge up memories of the disputed 2000 election that was settled by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Leading Romney's team is Benjamin Ginsberg, chief legal counsel for George W. Bush's presidential campaigns in 2000 and 2004.

Obama has turned to Robert Bauer, a past White House counsel who has spoken out against Republican-led efforts to alter voting laws in states including Ohio, a politically divided state that could determine who wins the November 6 election.

Already, Ginsberg and Bauer have been quiet players in the 2012 campaign.

This fall, the duo negotiated the terms of the three presidential debates and the one between Vice President Joe Biden and Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan. The agreement dealt with the details of the debates, such as the format of each event.

Before the Republican convention in Tampa, Florida, in late August, Ginsberg led the Romney campaign's efforts to wrest greater control over the party's rules, angering some Republican activists who saw the move as a power grab by Romney's team.

Ginsberg and Bauer, who did not respond to requests for comment, have been engaged in the same type of election legal adventures so frequently that Joe Allbaugh, Republican George W. Bush's campaign manager in 2000, teasingly calls them the "Bobbsey Twins," after the children's book characters.

For decades, Ginsberg and Bauer have given partisan legal advice for campaigns, recounts and election court battles.

"The truth is, there are very few lawyers who work in this area," Ginsberg told The New York Times in 2004.

Bauer has shown he is willing to enter the political fray.

This summer, he crossed swords with Republican strategist Karl Rove, claiming that American Crossroads, a conservative advocacy group co-founded by the former Bush adviser, was illegally colluding with Romney's campaign.

Under the U.S. tax code the non-profit arm of American Crossroads, known as Crossroads GPS, can raise and spend unlimited funds as a "social welfare" organization without disclosing its donors, as long as it advocates for positions on issues and does not directly support a candidate.

In June, Rove told Fox News the Crossroads group was not doing anything illegal and Bauer's criticism was "not going to change us in one way, shape or form from doing exactly what we're entitled to do under the law."

CHAOS AHEAD?

With Obama and Romney in a virtual dead heat in the polls, the state-by-state race for president has a range of chaotic possibilities.

The mostly likely scenario is that there will be a clear winner on election night, or the next morning. But the closeness of the race raises the possibility of a range of less conclusive, more confusing scenarios.

Among them: a disputed result in a state because of voting delays, problems with ballots or vote counting.

A contested election would send Bauer and Ginsberg - and law firms across the nation - rushing to courtrooms to question the validity of votes or any other irregularities that might have tipped the scales in a state's voting results.

The close finish to the 2012 race comes after a campaign season dominated by legal wrangling, including fights over laws that require voters to produce photo identification and change early-voting periods. Democrats have succeeded in getting many of the voting restrictions tossed aside.

LESSONS FROM 2000

Ginsberg and Bauer were both schooled in the acrimonious legal battle 12 years ago in Florida over votes cast for Bush and Democrat Al Gore, then the vice president.

The Florida dispute ended a month after the 2000 election, when the U.S. Supreme Court halted a recount and Bush was declared the winner in the state by 537 votes, out of about 6 million cast.

For campaigns, it offered some key lessons. First and foremost: Because most election disputes are guided at least initially by state law, it's crucial to lock up top law firms and attorneys in the state where a dispute occurs.

"We really weren't ready for the level of dispute in 2000," said Democratic strategist Tad Devine, a veteran of the Gore campaign, who has worked with Bauer. "We had a lawyer in every state, but we hadn't gone out and found the best lawyers in the country to represent our cause."

Veterans of the Bush campaign recall Ginsberg's steadiness in the hours after election night in 2000, when the lawyer arrived in Tallahassee, Florida's capital city.

"There was no panic in his face," Allbaugh recalled. "There was no panic in his voice."

'MOST POWERFUL, LEAST FAMOUS'

In 2004, Ginsberg came under criticism from Democrats for his double duty as general counsel to Bush's campaign and adviser to Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, an independent group that aired commercials criticizing the military record of Democratic nominee John Kerry.

Ginsberg resigned from the campaign.

Today he is a partner in the Washington law and lobbying firm Patton Boggs, where The New Republic last year ranked him among "Washington's Most Powerful, Least Famous People."

Bauer was an adviser to House and Senate Democrats during the impeachment trial of Democratic President Bill Clinton in 1998. He has been an adviser in Obama's 2008 campaign and was a White House counsel for Obama in 2010 and 2011.

His wife, Anita Dunn, is a former communications director for Obama's White House and is now a senior campaign adviser.

READY FOR RECOUNT

Bauer has led the Obama campaign's efforts to turn back new voting restrictions passed by Republican-led legislatures.

In July, the campaign sued the state of Ohio for ending early voting the weekend before the November 6 election.

Democrats said the law could have excluded many working-class voters who take advantage of early voting periods because they can't make it to the polls on Election Day.

Such voters tend to vote for Democrats, who have accused Republicans of trying to suppress the vote through new election laws in more than 20 states.

Ohio's Supreme Court recently struck down the law.

In a memo co-authored with deputy campaign manager Stephanie Cutter last week, Bauer said new voting laws - including those that require voters to show photo identification - will have a minimal impact on the November 6 election.

The memo concluded that Obama's campaign and its allies have successfully used the courts and public opinion to reverse Republican attempts to restrict access to voting. The memo's implied message: The legal battle in this election is underway, and we are winning.

A Romney campaign official, who declined to discuss specifics of the Republican's legal strategy, said the campaign is prepared, too: "We have all the resources and infrastructure we need for any potential dispute or recount."

How To Have Lifetime Equilibrium With Wealth - Bankruptcy Finance ...

You?re going to have to handle money for your whole life, so you might as well accept it. Bearing that in mind, you want to get a fiscal education. In the following paragraphs, you will find good advice on the best way to manage your private finances.

Come up with a budget based off of your total earnings and expenses. The very first thing you must do is determine your monthly earnings after taxes. Be certain to include your revenue. It is perfect to live within your means by not spending more than you earn.

Next, make an itemized, long list of all your costs. Be certain to list all yearly expenses, and also irregularly booked payments that you make. Examples of these items might be vehicle costs, insurance premiums and property taxes. Included in your list should be incidentals like entertainment, food, and even the price of hiring a babysitter. This list should be as inclusive as feasible so that you know precisely what you really spend on a regular basis.

Once you are assured you've tracked all of your finances and haven?t forgotten any minor payments, brush over your spending and decide where you can make cuts. As an example, take a cup of joe from home rather than stopping on the way to work. Removing these apparently irrelevant items will help you develop your long term budget.

Scale back your energy bill by improving your home?s energy conservation. Installing a modern, energy-efficient hot water heater and ensuring your windows are correctly sealed from the elements, are two ways to lower your energy use. New and efficient hot water heaters wait till you need hot water before heating it. Call a plumber to fix any pipe leaks, and see the positive impact it has on your water bill. Be certain to only use your dishwasher when it is full.

One great thing you can do is to reduce the amount of energy you use with your appliances. Many appliances are hogging unnecessary amounts of electricity because they weren't designed to be energy-efficient, so replacing these older products can help to reduce the price of your energy bill. The govt. also offers taxation benefits to folk who invest in these more ecologically friendly appliances. Appliances that aren't constantly running-your refrigerator, for example-should not be plugged in when not being used.

New insulation installed with a replacement roof will ensure that heat and cool air remain in the house. You will pay more now, but you save on bills.

If you use this information, you will have more cash. Upgrading appliances and other energy related elements of your house can help to save you tons of money on your water and electric bill every month. This puts you more in command of your money affairs going forward.

Also becareful in taking up personal loans. In Singapore, the govt only inspire Singaporeans to take a personal loan only if they can meet with the repayment. Don't forget to only borrow what you can pay as this can put you in a better financial position.

Tommy White is an enthusiastic blogger found in Dubai. He regularly browse the web to search for interesting topics to write online about. His current interest is on personal loans in singapore. You can discover more about his current interest by visiting this website

Music Lessons Teach Valuable Life Lessons | arts and entertainment

It is not surprising that parents who encourage their children to take up music lessons expect that the latter will eventually end up as singers, instrumentalists or in other words, musical performers who do both or any of those two things. Yet even though these children do not fulfil their parents' expectation, it does not necessarily mean that they are a disappointment. These children after all learn valuable and not to mention sensible lessons from the sessions they attended. Those things will see them through life and its every challenge.

For one, the kids learn the importance of discipline early on during the course of them taking Guitar lessons for example. Just as they learn to play musical instruments, these students, at the same time, acknowledge the need to practice and sharpen their skills in order to perform better. Also, as students, these kids likewise learn how to recover from their mistakes while they seek to find the smooth transition from failure to success. This likewise translates to mean that a student has what it takes to persevere amidst hard times as he or she strives to accomplish something no matter what.

And as if those are not enough, a class like this likewise provides the venue for the students to improve the way they relate with other people. They learn about the concept of cooperation and experience how it's like to work with one another towards a common goal. From applying what they learn by means of providing an accompaniment to a song, they later on make considerable contributions to the world they were born to.

At this point, it is already very obvious that music lessons train and mould a student not only in all things music but practically, in most things about life as well. A student takes home with him and her useful and universally applicable learning that is significant throughout his or her life. His or her gains clearly goes beyond mastering how to sing a song or play an instrument pretty well.

All of the things which a person acquires by means of taking up music lessons are instrumental in living his or her life in a manner which allows, encourages and dares him or her to realise his or her fullest potential possible. Regardless of whether a student chooses to eventually pursue a musical career or not, it's for certain that he or she will find that the learning gained is that which sees him or her through this life in general. And with such significant edge, this person really has what it takes to rise above the challenges that come his or her way.

"Dexter" and British Psychologist Ask: Who Wants to Be a Psychopath?

How?s this for a confluence of cultural currents? A British scientist chats about psychopaths with an American actor who plays a psychopathic serial killer on TV in front of an audience at a museum loaded with Buddhist art. A cocktail of science, show biz, art, religion, stirred by a provocative question: Would we be better off as psychopaths?

The researcher was Kevin Dutton, a psychologist at the University of Oxford (and friend since we met at a wacky science-religion powwow funded by the Templeton Foundation in Cambridge in 2005). Dutton?s new book is The Wisdom of Psychopaths: What Saints, Spies and Serial Killers Can Teach Us about Success (Scientific American/Farrar, Strauss and Giroux), which is as funny and fascinating as the title suggests.

The actor was Michael Hall, star of ?Dexter,? a hit show about a serial killer who kills serial killers. My two teenage kids and many of my students at Stevens Institute love ?Dexter,? as do I. Dutton, who is in the U.S. promoting his book, spoke to Hall on Wednesday at the Rubin Museum of Art, which bills itself as ?the premier museum of Himalayan art in the Western world? and hosts events on ?the interplay of art, meditation, space and the brain.?

In his remarks as in his book, Dutton held that being a psychopath?someone who lacks the empathy, compassion and conscience that bog down us ordinary folk?ain?t so bad. Dumb, extremely impulsive psychopaths often end up dead or in prison, Dutton said, but psychopaths can thrive if they?re smart and disciplined.

Psychopaths tend to be fearless, ruthless, capable of extraordinary focus, and they are cool and decisive in high-pressure situations that make others quail. Psychopaths excel at reading other peoples? facial expression, which comes in handy if they want to manipulate someone. (Dutton wrote about conmen and other master persuaders in a previous book.) They have a better-than-average ability to tell whether someone else is lying or is emotionally vulnerable.?Psychopathy, Dutton noted, falls on a spectrum rather than being an all-or-nothing condition, and psychopathic traits are common among CEOs, lawyers, media personalities, special-forces soldiers and surgeons.

Psychopaths are often charismatic, cheery, fun to be around. In their presence, Dutton said, you feel like ?anything is possible.??Dutton has never met a psychopath who regretted being a psychopath. Psychopaths tend to be happy even when locked up in prison or facing the death penalty. Rather than fearing the consequences of their actions, psychopaths focus on potential rewards, and they feel little or no regret when things go bad.

Like Dexter, who kills for its own sake, because killing serves some deep-rooted need for control, some psychopaths enjoy hurting and even killing others. But most employ violence only ?instrumentally,? as a means to an end, Dutton said. His own father, a salesman, was a psychopath. ?He was charming, fearless, ruthless (but never violent),? Dutton writes in Wisdom. ?He didn?t kill anyone. But he certainly made a few killings.?

Hall, who let Dutton do most of the talking, came across as humble, mild-mannered, even a bit shy?in short, un-psychopathic. I suspect audiences like Dexter, the character as well as the show, because they sense Hall?s real personality. Hall noted that, playing Dexter, he is pretending to be a psychopathic killer pretending to be normal. On the other hand, at times we all have to pretend to be normal, Hall commented, adding with a sly, Dexter-ish grin, ?I?m doing it right now.?

Prodded by Dutton, Hall said he envied some of Dexter?s traits, especially his capacity for stress-management. ?The more the heat goes up, the cooler Dexter gets,? Hall said. Dutton suggested that we all might benefit from cultivating our latent psychopathy. For example, most of us, if we want a promotion, focus on negative potential consequences. We fear annoying our boss, or being humiliated if we?re turned down. Either we don?t ask for the promotion or we?re so nervous that we botch the job. In contrast, psychopaths ?go for it,? Dutton said, consequences be damned, and their self-confidence is often self-fulfilling.

Next time you face a difficult situation, Dutton said, imagine what you?d do if you had no fear. ?Psychopath up!??Another way to become more psychopathic, Dutton suggested, might be to meditate. In a study that he calls ?Monks Versus Punks,? Dutton has carried out psychological tests of Buddhist monks and compared them to psychopaths. Like psychopaths, monks are often calm and decisive in the face of stress; free of anxiety, even in the face of death; and able to read others? expressions accurately.

The big difference, Dutton said, is that monks are motivated by compassion for others, whereas psychopaths seek only their own pleasure. But maybe this difference is not so great (and this is my point, not Dutton?s). After all, many modern gurus?notably Chogyam Trungpa, who helped bring Tibetan Buddhism to the west decades ago?act like narcissistic monsters. That?s one reason why I?m so down on Buddhism.

In my previous column, I quoted philosopher Peter Singer worrying that Americans voters are too selfish and lacking in concern for others. Sometimes I fantasize about what it would be like to live without anxiety and guilt, without caring how my actions will affect myself and others. What freedom! But does the world really need more psychopaths? Don?t we have too many already?
