Even though we spend a fair amount of our Sundays running around to kids soccer games, I know that once we get home, we will have a fun afternoon ahead of us?..watching NFL football! ?I grew up watching football every Sunday, and for me, it just doesn?t feel like fall unless I hear a game on in the family room, and my family is hanging out on the couch cheering, explaining the game, protesting plays that aren?t ?fair? (because of course nothing is fair if their favorite team is losing!), and doing little victory dances when their team scores! I look forward to watching football games together all year long!
So I like to make these afternoons special?. I serve our version of ?football food?, the kids don their players tees and jerseys (and sometimes even a helmet!), and everyone picks a team to cheer for?. so here are my 5 fab ways to enjoy football with your family!
1. Serve some football food!
I know that it is supposed to be all about the game? but really, for me- the food is key. Pizza and chicken wings are a must. A special football cake (decorated with football players made from Teddy Grahams, of course!) is a fun treat. And I love to serve a special beverage- party punch for the kids, and a Bass Ale for the grown-ups. Here?s a recipe for the party punch that your kids are sure to love:
Party Punch
1 can of frozen orange juice concentrate 1 container of Hawaiian Punch fruit punch 1 2 liter bottle of 7-Up 1 container of rainbow sherbetFill a large punch bowl halfway with Hawaiian Punch and add 7-Up until the bowl is ? full. Stir in one can of orange juice concentrate (found in the frozen foods section of the grocery store), and then top with scoops of rainbow sherbet. Gently stir and then enjoy!
2. Pick a team!
Yes, half our house is made up of Jets fans, and the other half loves the Giants, and then you have my husband who grew up in Lions country, while I great up in Cleveland Browns territory? so well, we certainly have quite a number of favorite teams! But no matter who is playing- I have the kids each pick a team to cheer for (and yes, sometimes they do switch their alliances halfway through the game based on who is winning!) because cheering is part of the fun!
3. Break Some Rules
Normally we don?t allow our kids to eat in our family room? but when it?s ?game time?, we change up the rules, and spread a plastic tablecloth on one of the coffee tables or ottomans and set up a dinner buffet for everyone to enjoy.
4. Explain the Game
When kids are younger, they easily understand the ?big stuff? like touchdowns and field goals, but it is nice to start explaining some of the details of the game to them as they grow older?. how the clock works, the number of downs to advance 10 yards, and of course penalties. Because kids are ?all about? right and wrong? and love to point out when a player has made a mistake!
5. Don?t forget to watch the commercials!
During the super bowl, the commercials are as exciting as the football game! But even while watching on regular football weekends, the commercials can be pretty entertaining too!
